FORMER Sunderland captain and Darlington manager Gary Bennett has made his latest signing – his own son Andre.

Gary now works as a consultant to BHP Sport, the specialist representation and management division of legal firm BHP Law, and is mentoring 15-year-old Andre as he develops his football career.

The schoolboy has won a two year scholarship with Middlesbrough FC, the next important step to securing a professional contract.

John Pratt, managing partner of BHP Law and a registered lawyer with The Football Association, said: “Andre has done tremendously well to reach this stage and I am sure he has a bright future ahead of him in the professional game. We are delighted that he has chosen BHP Sport for his first Representation Contract .

“At this stage he doesn’t really need an agent – our role will become more relevant as his career progresses. What is important for Andre and young players like him is that they get the right support from the outset to ensure they make the best possible career decisions and in this respect their parents and their football club are crucial.

“Andre could not have a better mentor than his father, who knows the game inside out, and we are delighted to be in the background to able to guide him the through the legal aspects of the business as and when they arise . For the time being however he just needs to concentrate on his football and he could not be at a better place than Middlesbrough FC with their reputation for producing young talent.

Andre has been a member of the MFC Academy for the past two years and also plays for local team Redby.

The scholarship will not only develop his game, as he hones his skills as a defender, but also looks after his further education and offers him the chance to take coaching qualifications.

Gary added: “He has a really good chance of making it. He is good on the ball, has great pace and can use either foot – he is better than me at that age.

“With the help of BHP Sport, we will support him as his career develops and I will ensure he remains grounded, surrounded by his real friends and works hard.”

Andre said: “I have loved football for as long as I can remember and am thrilled to be offered a scholarship. It is my dream, one day, to follow in my dad’s footsteps and play professionally.”

BHP Sport specialises in identifying young footballers with talent and is now building up a stable of young stars playing for clubs across the country from the Premiership , Football League and Conference.

The team includes John and Gary, former England player and Middlesbrough and Bolton manager Colin Todd and Gary Gill, ex-Middlesbrough player and manager of Gateshead.
